A veteran human rights activist, Hasan Mansur, passed away here on February 12.
Prof. Mansur, 84 year old, retired HOD of English, Bangalore University, was involved with the activities of People’s Union for Civil Liberties ( PUCL ). He was also a part of various fact-finding and human rights initiatives in Karnataka and other places.
A founding member of the Karnataka Civil Liberties Committee ( KCLC ) in 1984, he was actively associated with PUCL till his death.
The PUCL State committee in its press release stated that Prof. Mansur was instrumental in broad-basing the concerns of PUCL and taking it beyond the traditional human rights issues. He also assisted PUCL in focusing attention on violations of socio-economic rights, right to housing and the right to water.
Prof. Mansur was also associated with trade union movements for nearly 65 years and was one among the founding members of the Karnataka chapter of Indo-Pak People’s Friendship Forum. He was admired for the way he brought together literature, politics and human rights.
Prof. Mansur is survived by his wife, Hasnath Mansur and a son. Funeral prayers were held at Arab Lane Mosque on Richmond Road on February 12 evening.Courtesy: Karnataka Muslims.
