Prof. Haragopal laments dehumanizing conditions of slums

The Dept. of Political Science and Public Administration, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, organized 2–days national seminar on “Democratic Decentralization in Urban India for Good Governance and Sustainable Development” from 25th to 26th March 2013. The seminar aimed at finding out the prevailing realities in the urban governance. It was also to highlight the gaps in the local bodies’ governance and deliberate upon it. Besides this, the experts deliberated upon the topic at length and tried to find out the ways and means of policy intervention, so as to improve the governance at the urban local levels. In addition to this, it was also looked into the modus operendi of decentralizing the power at urban level for a sustainable development.

For the last two days technical sessions were focusing on the above theme. At the end of the 2-days programme the valedictory programme was held. Prof. G. Haragopal, Former Dean, School of Social Sciences, University of Hyderabad and National Fellow ICSSR at TISS, Hyderabad attended as the Chief Guest. Prof. Haragopal spoke at length on the issues and problems confronting the urban local bodies’ level and attributed it to the neo-liberal policies.

Prof. Haragopal cited the examples of dehumanizing conditions of Mumbai Slums, which should be done away with. Prof. Mohammad Miyan, Vice Chancellor while delivering his presidential asked the delegates, scholars, teachers and students to introspect and see the causes of these problems at the urban level and further probe and try to find out solutions so as to address them at a micro level for a good governance. He also, while endorsing the views of Prof. Haragopal, cautioned the august gathering, not to lose nations sovereignty, and individual liberty and try to negotiate with the situation and overcome the problems.

Earlier, Prof. S. M. Rahmatullah, Registrar & Seminar Director spoke on the success of the seminar and Dr. Dastagirbasha Chabnur, Asst. Professor read the Rapporteurs report and Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, Asst. Professor conducted proceedings. Dr. Najiullah, Asst. Professor proposed vote of thanks.
