Produce five students, install CCTVs, Police tells JNU VC

New Delhi: After arresting Kanhaiya Kumar, a student leader of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), on Friday on charges of sedition following the raising of anti-national slogans during an event, Delhi Police on Saturday requested university vice chancellor Jagadesh Kumar to produce five more students allegedly involved in anti-national activities.

The letter for producing the five students was sent by Investigating Officer Prabhu Dayal in connection with a sedition case lodged at the Vasant Kunj police station.

A day before Kumar was arrested, police had requested him for permission to enter the JNU premises to record acts of sedition and anti-national speeches.

The letter seeking permission to enter the campus was sent by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath.

The Investigating Officer’s letter, seeking to question Umar Khalid, Ashutosh Kumar, Anirban Bhattacharya, Rama Naga and Ananta Prakash, stated that they were identified on the basis of evidence collected.

Meanwhile, Nath’s letter sought permission for the force to enter the campus to use the video coverage for covering the activities of such acts or expressions of sedition and anti-national speeches for legal action.

Nath also requested the VC of the varsity to provide video cameras to security staff to record such events for post-incident analysis.

“You are also requested to install CCTV cameras at the entry/exit points and strategic locations in the interest of safety and security of the university campus,” Nath said in the letter.

“The information regarding such anti-national expressions and speeches of sedition be immediately given to police.so that necessary action is taken by the police at the earliest,” it added.

A Delhi Court on Friday sent JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar to a three-day police custody.

The development came as the police produced him in the Patiala House Court here after his arrest.

Kumar was arrested following the controversy over anti-India slogans being raised at an event in the varsity against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Kumar earlier alleged that the entire episode was just ‘an excuse’ as he defeated the ABVP candidate in the union elections.

“This is an excuse, I defeated the ABVP in Students Union elections, that is why it is happening,” he said.

The Delhi Police had earlier registered an FIR against some unknown persons on a complaint filed by the Press Club management against the event organizers.

The complaint in this regard was filed at the Parliament Street Police Station.

The Delhi Police had earlier registered a case of sedition against the JNU students, who had agitated against Guru’s hanging following complaints by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Maheish Girri and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad ( ABVP) members. (ANI)
