In the Lok Sabha, members from Opposition parties trooped into the Well as soon as the House met for the day.

Members belonging to BJP, Left, SP, BSP and Shiv Sena raised slogans, saying prices of essential commodities were witnessing an increase since the UPA came to power at the Centre.

TDP members, on their part, were raising slogans against creation of Telangana and demanding a unified Andhra Pradesh, even as their floor leader Nama Nageswara Rao was not present.

Fissures in TDP were also visible as four of its members from non-Telengana areas were in the Well carrying placards ‘We want united AP’, while one of their party colleague was seen in his seat holding a placard ‘Jai Telengana’.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday held a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs to discuss the Telangana issue to arrive at a consensus on the contentious issue.

The over two-hour long meeting, which started at 1800 hrs, was attended by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, Union Agriculture Minister and NCP leader Sharad Pawar, Railway Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, Minister for Textiles and DMK leader Dayanidhi Maran and other senior Cabinet ministers.

Cabinet Secretary K Chandrasekhar and Home Secretary G K Pillai also attended the meeting.

The meeting was called in view of the large-scale protest against the government’s announcement to initiate the process of forming a separate Telangana state. The government wants to evolve a consensus on the issue of Telangana.

Chidambaram had earlier announced to initiate the process of formation of a separate Telangana state following a hunger strike by TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao.

The TRS had launched an agitation in which a large number of people, including students, had participated. However, once the Centre announced to initiate the process of formation of Telanaga, a lot of voices were raised in protest against it.
