Probe ordered into sleaze rap on IPS officer

Hyderabad, January 29: As expected, director-general of police K Aravinda Rao today asked his colleague Kode Durga Prasad to enquire into sleaze allegations against controversial IPS officer PSR Anjaneyulu. The move comes several days after chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy directed the DGP to conduct an enquiry and submit a report.

Anjaneyulu, who is presently IGP, Greyhounds, allegedly sent indecent SMSes to a few women while he was Vijayawada police commissioner.

According to sources, the top brass of the police were initially against an enquiry because no one had lodged a formal complaint against Anjaneyulu. They were of the view that since the alleged SMSes were apparently sent and received by mutual consent, there were no grounds for an enquiry.

However, there was growing criticism that the episode was a slur on the image of the police and that sending such SMSes amounted to misconduct. Therefore, the DGP decided to go ahead with the enquiry against Anjaneyulu. Accordingly, additional DGP (provisions and logistics) Durga Prasad has been asked to conduct the enquiry and submit a report. No time frame has been fixed for the enquiry.

When contacted, Durga Prasad said he would first seek information on the SMSes allegedly sent by Anjaneyulu from the TV channel that broke the story and then proceed further. ‘’I will have to visit some places (to which the women to whom the SMSes were sent belong) and talk to various persons. The task has been entrusted to me and I will complete the enquiry,’’ Durga Prasad said.

Interestingly, in the numerous television interviews Anjaneyulu gave on the day the channel broke the story on the lewd SMSes, the 1992 batch IPS officer had admitted that he did indeed send the SMSes. He had said it was a game plan by some persons and he had only ‘’wanted to see till what extent they would go.’’
