Probe against Jagan’s assets is still on: IT Dept

Chief Commissioner Income Tax Department J K Hota revealed that the scrutinizing of 12 to 13 files pertaining to YSR Congress President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s assets were in different stages and Director General Investigation has been entrusted the responsibility for the same.

While refusing to disclose further details about the ongoing investigations into Jagan’s assets, the Chief Commissioner also refrained himself to reveal anything about mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy’s investigation by describing it as a confidential matter.

Addressing the Press Conference here today Mr. Hota informed that the department has received Rs. 44.39 crore of income tax returns in the first quarter of the year 2012. He said that NMDC was the biggest remitter in the corporate sector with Rs 650 crore of Income Tax. The IT department has received 2, 79, 669 complaints last year in which more than 2, 38,720 cases were solved while the remaining 40,000 cases are pending with the department.

He also said that nearly Rs.10, 000 crore of income tax arrears of last year were yet to be recovered from the customers across the State. He hoped that this year the department was expecting to fetch Rs.1,40,000/- as income tax returns from the customers while Rs.35,000/- crores of returns have already been submitted.

Stating that the last date to file the returns is July 31st, the Chief Commissioner said that the department has established 12 counters in Income Tax Tower, AC Guards and 12 excess counters in Aayakar Bhavan, Basheerbagh to facilitate the remitters. At special counters, officials concern will also extend their help in filing returns by guiding the remitters.

Moreover, the department has been providing some special facilities to file the returns for senior citizens, women and the disabled person. The Chief Commissioner appealed the remitters to make sure the PAN Number and their Bank Account MICR code are mentioned correctly in the form to avoid any inconveniency.

Hota said that e-filing was mandatory for the customers having income more than Rs,10,00,000/- per annum while others can file their returns without this restriction. Making it clear that the State Government was not a tax defaulter, he said that some departments including the HMDA, APSIDC, APSFC and Housing Board have approached the IT Tribunal and High Court against the notices served by the Income Tax Department.
