Pro-Taliban militants kill 2 tribal elders in Bajaur

Bajaur, December 07: A bomb blast in Pakistan’s tribal district of Bajaur has left at least two anti-militant elders dead and two others wounded amid rising militancy.

The incident happened on Sunday outside a mosque in Malangi village, which was the focus of a recent army operation against the pro-Taliban militants.

Both tribesmen are said to have been respected elders who spoke out against militancy in the region.

The attack comes two days after forty people died when militants targeted worshippers attending Friday prayers in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

Militants in Pakistan have targeted an Islamic university, mosques and military headquarters over the past months, plunging the nuclear-armed country into crisis.

In a separate incident, Pakistani security forces claim to have killed at least a dozen of militants in northwestern Swat valley over the past 24 hours.

Pakistan’s army says its troops have killed more than 1000 militants in the valley since late April 2009.
