Private transporters strike it rich

Hyderabad, February 24: With all bus operators including the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) shutting down their services, many passengers were seen risking their lives to travel to their respective destinations by boarding crowded jeeps and other private vehicles.

The problem was particularly severe for people supposed to travel long distance.

Hundreds of travellers gathered at LB Nagar, Dilsukhnagar, Secunderabad and other suburbs in look out for some transport.

To make maximum advantage of the situation, a few private operators plied nearly 50 vehicles, mostly Scorpios, Sumos and Innovas.

The moment a jeep arrived, nearly 100 persons were seen chasing to occupy the eight-seater vehicle.

With such a mad rush, transporters bundled in as many passengers as possible in each vehicle.

“In each vehicle, nearly 12 or 13 passengers were bundled in. We had to struggle for two hours together sitting on each other. It was a dangerous journey,’’ M Balaswamy a passenger who travelled to Vijayawada for Rs 600, said.
