Private companies shy away from Old City, Who to blame?

Recruiters from the private sector were conspicuously absent at the Old City venue of the ‘Direct Placement Job Mela’ that was conducted under Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu (RYK) mission on Wednesday reported Times.

According to official figures, 11 companies shortlisted 141 candidates from ITI (Industrial Training Institute) Musheerabad where 286 students attended while only one company turned up at ITI Old City to shortlist 10 candidates out of the 243 who participated. The district administration had decided to conduct the job melas on the first and third Wednesdays of every month to place youth in private firms under the Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu (RYK) mission.

There are 12,743 unemployed youth registered from the Old City and the state-wide mission is to place 15 lakh unemployed youth by 2014. Placements under the mission are two-fold __ direct placements (DP) through job melas and the training cum placement (TP) where youth are imparted training in work areas which are in demand, following which they are recruited.

The Hyderabad district administration has set a target of placing 10,000 youth in the current financial year through DP job melas. During the last mela some big private recruiters chose to fill their quota from ITI Musheerabad and ITI Sanathnagar leaving little for candidates who attended the programme at ITI Old City and ITI Mallepally.

While the youth who missed out this time can console themselves given that the recruitment programme will be held twice every month, observers cannot help but detect a ‘hint’ of bias. Mazher Hussain, executive director Cova, rues that misconceived notions often work against the Old City youth when it comes to education and employment. “A bias against recruiting people from the Old City ever since riots became frequent three decades ago, unfortunately still exists,” he opined.

Emphasizing that training is essential, B Rasheed an official from Mission For Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (Mepma) maintained that youth from the Old City are equally employable. “At direct placement melas the recruiter does not know what they are getting. So they usually prefer to take people through the TP mode. When it comes to recruitment through TP mode there is no difference in recruitment figures of the Old City and other parts of the city,” he explained.

The district administration officials are going all out to ensure that the Old City youth are not left out. It has been learnt that officials are planning to shift the venue of future job melas from Old City ITI to ITI Musheerabad.
