The North Chennai street have got a view of many nuptials but on Sunday, the rustic lanes of the city, infamous for gang wars, witnessed a wedding straight out of the movies.
Aruna, twenty- seven- year- old married to 38- year- old Somasundaram— a criminal sentenced to life—was given permission to leave Puzhal Central Prison in Tiruvallur district near Chennai for his wedding.
A petition was filed by the bride in the Madras High Court seeking 30 days special leave for Somasundaram. However, the court has granted only 10 days leave to the prisoner.
On Saturday evening, Somasundaram was released from the prison for his wedding, a private affair, which was held at a temple in Vyasarpadi in the company of heavy police security on Sunday morning.
Other than the security, it gave the impression of any other traditional south Indian wedding. As the groom was dressed in a dhoti and white shirt and the bride wore a maroon kanchivaram silk sari, accessorised with jewels. Friends and relatives are in good spirits and teasing the two even as the couple turn scarlet.
Aruna, an advocate by professional first met Somasundaram when she visited the prison for a case. Somasundaram was a former don who was sentenced to life for killing former MLA Balan. Somasundaram by now spent 12 years behind the bars.
As said by Aruna’s counsel Pugazhendi,“ Any convict who has spent more than 14 years can be released under certain government schemes. We have to see if he gets any such privileges.
He has a good conduct certificate, has been doing yoga and even passed a few exams with more than 80 per cent marks.” “ We want them to lead a happy life.
a relative requestedby saying that “if he gets released, they can walk as a couple. Please allow us to enjoy this moment in our private space.”
Aruna look forward to Somasundaram’s released so that they can start a new life.
