Prison fight leaves 23 dead in Mexico

Mexico City, January 20: A fight among inmates left at least 23 dead Wednesday at a jail in the northern Mexican city of Durango, said the Public Security Ministry of the state of the same name.

“The brawl happened in the area of those awaiting trial, and there are 23 confirmed dead,” a ministry spokesman told DPA.

The authorities were investigating the incident, which happened in Durango, about 900 kilometres northwest of Mexico City.

In March, a fight among rival gangs linked to drug cartels left 20 dead at a jail in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, on the US border.
