Principal booked for abetting suicide

Trombay, January 22: Police have registered a case of abetting suicide against the principal and a clerk of the Swami Vivekanand School, Trombay, after a Std VIII student of the school committed suicide.

Khalid Abdulla Shaikh, 13, hanged himself in his room at his uncle’s home at Chitah Camp, Trombay, on Wednesday after he was suspended for eight days for beating up a classmate, Akshay Sharma, also 13.

Principal Anita Nair and clerk Chandrika Nair called Abdul, the maternal uncle of Khalid, to school to complain about his ward’s behaviour and informed him that the lad had been suspended for assaulting his classmate. Akshay had suffered a bleeding nose after the beating.

Following the meeting, Abdul dropped the lad at his residence and left for work. It was only at about 7:15pm, when Khalid’s cousin came to call him for dinner, that the boy’s suicide was discovered.

Abdul’s daughter was shocked to see her cousin hanging from a ceiling fan in his room. Khalid had used a nylon rope to hang himself. He was rushed to hospital, but he was declared dead before admission.

On Thursday Abdul approached the Trombay police station and lodged a complaint against the principal and the clerk, saying it was their decision to suspend Khalid that had driven his ward to take the extreme step.

In the complaint, Abdul said Khalid had been warned by the principal and the clerk that he would be punished in class if he tried to attend school before the end of the eight-day suspension period.
