Prince Charles meets Grand Imam, Archbishop

The Prince of Wales has met with a leading Sunni Muslim and the Archbishop of Canterbury for talks which were expected to include interfaith relations.

It’s thought Charles would have talked about ties between Muslims and Christians at the meeting with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar in Egypt, Professor Dr Ahmad Al-Tayyeb and Justin Welby.

Charles invited the duo to Clarence House last night after the imam, who’s seen as the one of the highest authorities in Sunni Islamic thought and Islamic jurisprudence, was welcomed to Lambeth Palace by the Archbishop of Canterbury on Tuesday.

Charles has spoken out often about the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and in particular the threat to the Coptic Church in Egypt.

On early evening of Tuesday after a meeting with the archbishop, the Imam said that he was against Western military action to target IS:

“I prefer the diplomatic solution because I represent an organisation which refuses bloodshed, no matter where is this bloodshed and where from.”
