Prima facie evidence exists against MLA, police tell SHRC

Hyderabad, July 11: In a clear indication that the noose is tightening around Kovvur TDP MLA T V Rama Rao, the West Godavari district police today informed the AP State Human Rights Commission (APSHRC) that there was primafacie evidence against the MLA that he attempted to molest a student of Spruha Nursing College in West Godavari district.

The Commission chairman B.Subhashan Reddy had sought a report from the West Godavari police who were investigating the case before it was transferred to the State Crime Investigation Department (CID).

The Narsapur DSP P Venkata Rama Reddy today submitted the report to Subhashan Reddy. In the report, it was mentioned that there was prima facie evidence against the MLA for attempting to molest a girl in the college.

“Our investigation revealed that the incident took place and the matter has been referred to the CID,’’ the DSP told reporters after submitting the report. The hearing has been posted to August 3.

However, police sources disclosed to Express that when the allegations of rape and murder besides molestation were levelled against Rama Rao, the district police spoke to several students and the management.

“A team of police officials spoke to them but they did not reveal anything and denied that any incident took place. Later, we received a tip-off from the brother of one of the students, who is based in Vizag, that the MLA did try to molest a student. But before we could probe the issue further, the case was transferred to CID,’’ sources said.

Meanwhile, the Director of Medical Education
, Sudha Ramani informed the Commission that the five girls of Spruha Nursing College (who had lodged complaint against the MLA) would be accommodated in a Government College and their accommodation would also be taken care of.

Her assurance came after the Commission directed her to accommodate the students in one of the colleges.

“We will also take up counselling for them,’’ she told the Commission.

The Additional SP (CID), M Gopal Raju, who was present there to give a investigation status report, informed the Commission that the case was still under investigation.

In a related development, the Vijayawada Forensic Science Laboratory ruled out that the blood stains found on certain walls in the college, was actually blood. However, a second opinion is being taken from the experts at the AP Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL).

Meanwhile, Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, who hails from Kerala, found fault with TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu defending his party MLA, who is facing rape and murder charges.
