Priest remanded in police custody till Nov 30

Chennai, November 27: The Madras High Court today remanded a priest of Kancheepuram, allegedly involved in immoral activities with women in the precincts of a temple, in police custody till November 30.

Justice C T Selvam granted police custody of Devananthan (36) on a petition from Kancheepuram police in connection with a case filed under relevant sections of the IPC, including 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and race and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 506 (ii)(punishment for criminal intimidation).

Devanathan, a priest of a temple in Kancheepuram, had surrendered before a magistrate in that town on November 16 after evading the police dragnet for nearly a month. His bail application was rejected on November 24.

The priest had allegedly recorded his “immoral acts” on his mobile phone.
