Pricey peaches stolen from China laboratory

Thieves in China got away with peaches worth 100,000 yuan ($15,700) that were grown scientifically at a research institute.

Three unemployed men who stole the peaches Monday night had no idea about their real value, according to China Daily Wednesday.

It took more than 10 years to cultivate the fruit at Zhengzhou Fruit Research Institute in Henan province.

Researcher Niu Liang said that 15 kg of peaches, of nearly 20 different varieties, have been stolen. He said over 2 million yuan was invested in the programme.

Niu managed to catch one of the three suspects with help from his colleagues.

The suspect is from the local village and has no idea about the real value of the peaches, according to a report of the Dahe Daily.

“I really didn’t know that the peaches were so expensive,” Li Yonggang, the middle-aged man caught by Niu, said.
