Patna, March 23: Expressing grave concern over female foeticide,
child marriage and dowry, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today
exhorted all to make concerted efforts to wipe out the ills.
The president, who was speaking after inaugurating the centenary
celebration of the Bihar Legislative Council, also advised the
Centre and state governments to ensure percolation of benefits of
welfare schemes to the lowest section of society.
”It is really disgusting to note that social ills like child
marriage, dowry, female foeticide and drug addiction are still
prevalent,” Mrs Patil said.
She exhorted the people to launch concerted efforts to wipe these
out of the society.
”Sustianed efforts by all sections of the society are required
to remove the ills of child marraige, female foeticide and dowry
which still remain a stigma on society,” the president observed.
She said there was urgent need to change the attitude of the
society towards girls and women.
”Women empowerment and girls’ education are vital to accelerate
the programmes aimed at eradicating poverty from the society,” Mrs
Patil said, adding the state governments should evolve such
programmes which could act as incentive for female education.
