Puducherry, February 12: Former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam today stressed the need for focussing on preventive nephrology saying the country add 1.5 lakh new cases of Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD) every year.
“India adds an additional 1,50,000 new cases of end stage CKD requiring dialysis or transplant to existing lot requiring dialysis or transplant. And of these, only a mere 5-7 per cent are able to get some form of treatment,” he said.
Inaugurating a three-day 30th annual conference “Nephrological Health Care for all” of the Indian Society of Nephrology (Southern Chapter) at JIPMER here, he said diabetes and hyper tension were two prominent causes that lead to CKD accounting for 41 per cent and 22 per cent respectively of total cases.
He stressed that nephrologists should become “teachers of families of patients to tell them how the disease picks up”.
