Pregnant woman’s death: Docs blamed

Hyderabad, February 05: Chaos prevailed at the Sultan Bazar Maternity Hospital when the family of a 30-year-old woman who died with twins in her womb created a ruckus blaming doctors for her death. They broke the glass panes of the operation theatre and allegedly manhandled doctors.

It all started when Firdous Fatima, a resident of Yakutpura, who was rushed to the hospital at 9.30 am on Thursday. The hospital authorities said that after preliminary investigations, the doctors found that one baby had already died while the other was in a critical condition in the womb. Moreover, Fatima was suffering from severe respiratory tract infection.

Despite the death of one of the babies in her womb, doctors decided to undertake surgery on Fatima 24 hours later. Authorities reasoned that they had put Fatima on antibiotics.

“We planned the surgery for Friday since we were making arrangements for blood transfusion as there were chances for complications in the surgery. Her blood group (O-ve) was also not available. It was a rare case of amniotic fluid embolism,’’ Prof G Umadevi, who handled the case, said.

However, Fatima’s condition started deteriorating a few hours after admission. “By the time we shifted her to the theatre to perform surgery, her blood pressure levels dropped considerably. We could not resuscitate her. During the admission itself we explained to the family the complications and that she was a high risk case. She was declared dead at 4.45 pm,” said the authorities.

Doctors said that during her first visit on Jan. 5, Fatima was asked to get admitted and also get investigations done but she did neither and came on Thursday.

The situation turned tense when Charminar MLA Pasha Quadri along with two corporators joined the protest and sought suspension of the doctors. District collector Navin Mittal has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
