Pregnant woman crushed to death by bus in Andhra

Visakhapatnam: In a tragic incident, a pregnant woman was killed today after being hit by a state-run bus whose driver apparently suffered an epileptic seizure here, police said.

T Nookaratnam (23) was a resident of Marikavalasa area.

The driver of the State Road Transport Corporation bus lost control over the vehicle after apparently suffering an epileptic seizure.

The bus swerved off the road and hit the woman who was waiting near a bus stop along with her husband T Kanakaraju and a relative they said.

Nookaratnam, who was nine-month pregnant, had gone to a hospital for medical check-up. The trio had just returned from a visit to the hospital and was waiting to board a bus on their way to home, Inspector of Two-Town Police Station G V Ramana said.

The state-run bus first rammed into a parked autorickshaw and then hit Nookaratnam at a high speed. The bus came to a halt after crashing into a roadside tree.

Police said the woman died on the spot, while her husband and the relative accompanying them had a miraculous escape.

The driver was taken into custody.

Ramana said police would seek a report from doctors about the health condition of the driver, whose identity was not disclosed by the police.
