Pradeep Sharma’s first night in jail

Mumbai, January 09: The encounter specialist looked nervous and worried, ate nothing and did not sleep

Pradeep Sharma, the 50-year-old former encounter specialist of the Mumbai police, who is facing charges of carrying out a fake encounter in 2006, will spend the next six days in the lock-up at the Bandra police station.

According to police sources, Sharma was arrested at 10 pm on Thursday and was brought to the Bandra police station at 10.30 pm.

He was wearing a white striped shirt and blue jeans. His wallet and belongings were handed over to a person who had accompanied him and he was sent to the general lock up at around 11 pm.

He was then taken to the nearby Bhabha Hospital where doctors diagnosed him for high blood pressure, given medication and brought back to the police station around 12.30 am.

When he was asked about food, Sharma refused, stating he had eaten at home. He will only be allowed food provided by the police station, till the court allows him to have home food.

Police sources added that a lawyer and few of his close aides visited the police station late in the night seeking a meeting with Sharma, but were denied permission.

Meanwhile, Sharma maintained a distance from the rest of the inmates and spent time alone in the corridor of the lock-up sitting close to the guards.

He did not speak and looked worried, say police sources.

Said senior inspector Prakash George of Bandra police station, “He has not requested for any special treatment nor have we given any. He is like any other accused.”
