She discussed to express her plans to bring up the best IPS officers.

Interview:

Being the first woman director of the academy, Bahuguna encourages women to be a part of IPS fraternity by cracking the UPSC. Ahead of the 68 batch Regular Recruits (RR) IPS probationers passing out parade, Aruna Bahuguna spoke to Express on her plans to produce best IPS officers.

What are the new initiatives that you propose to introduce in NPA to train the IPS probationers?
After I took charge as the director, I decided to provide and implement academic and practical training to IPS probationers.

Why there is a fewer women opting for civil services?
There is a change taking place women who have come forward in choosing IPS as their career option. For instance, in the 68th batch of RR, there are two women doctors who have preferred to choose IPS after they cracked the UPSC. Ravjot Grewal from Punjab has done BDS and then chose IPS.
Similarly, Chetana Mylabthula from Telangana has finished MBBS and is now a civil servant. The number of women choosing IPS will go up in the future.

The IPS officers, who trained well during probation, sometimes, end up on the wrong side of the law. Why?
As trainers, we teach them how to talk to public, how to handle sensitive issues and be a sincere police officer while discharging duties both academically and practically. We also explain the political pressure on police officials that cripple an official’s sincerity. After training, it depends on the officer’s attitude and behaviour to do it the right way. We have set up a police station in academy premises and probationers work there by dispensing SHO duties.
How do you plan to train probationers on cyber crime, tactical management and dealing with women related issues?
Cyber crime is posing a major threat to the nation. We have specially set up a digital lab where the probationers get training in getting knowledge on cyber crime and how to detect the cases.
