Power woes ahead of summer this year

With the Discoms unable to arrange additional power corridors given their limited availability in the south, the state’s power situation is expected to worsen. The fact that the loss of about 1,000 MW of power due to technical failures at four different units could not be corrected so far, has added to the woes.

Power shortage is increasing fast, and officials say that additional power purchases may not be possible this summer due to corridor constraints.

Currently the power demand in the state is hovering around 265 MU a day and is likely to hit 285 MU in the next 10 days. Incidentally, the power demand touched an all time high of 285 MU per day this year.

The demand is estimated to touch 300 MU a day during peak summer. Although the Discoms have tied up an additional power of 2,000 MW under medium term bidding, that will be available only from June. Meanwhile, many parts of the city are experiencing unscheduled cuts ranging from one hour to six hours. The power shortage is hovering around 20 MU currently with the state losing generation at Simahari NTPC, Kothagudem and Lanco power units.
