Karimnagar, November 06: The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Ramagundam, known generally as a power generating corporation, is also a socially responsible organisation.
The 2600-MW capacity Corporation not only distributes power to the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Pondicherry but also organises community development (CD) programmes .
NTPC, Ramagundam, had initiated various CD activities by launching Corporation Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in 2004. Since then several development programmes were taken up every year. The Corporation allocated Rs 31 lakh for the schemes in 2004-05 and the amount has been raised to Rs 1.5 crore in 2009-10.
Apart from providing basic amenities to those displaced by the Corporation, NTPC has also adopted a few villages nearby it and has been putting in efforts to transform them into model residential areas.
They include Annapurna Colony, New Poradpahad, Narrashalapalli, Kundanpalli, Elkapalli and six other villages. The management of the company distributes notebooks and uniforms to school children in these places.
Construction of additional classrooms, conducting medical camps for livestock, providing protected drinking water and corporate- level medical facilities, laying roads are some other activities taken up by the Corporation in the adopted villages. Literacy drives are also organised in the residential areas.
Recently, the NTPC has adopted the ITI college in Karimangar and has allocated Rs 2.5 crore for its upgradation.
There are plans to introduce new courses and replace the old building with a new one.
Speaking to this paper, NTPC General Manager Thomas Joseph said the Corporation was committed to the development of adopted villages.
