Power cuts make Hyderabadi life miserable

Hyderabad, May 05: It seems that the heat wave conditions, currently being experienced by people in the state are expected to get worse. Meterological officials say day temperatures might shoot up further in many areas including in the third week of May, with the mercury hovering between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature might cross 44 degree Celsius in Hyderabad while places like Adilabad, Nizamabad and Ramagundam are predicted to touch the 46-degree mark. With the temperatures shooting beyond 40 degree Celsius in many places on Wednesday, MeT officials predicted the temperature is likely to go up in Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Ramagundam in the Telangana region, Tirupati, Kurnool, Anantapur and Nandyal in Rayalaseema and Tuni, Vijayawada, Rentachintala, Guntur and Ongole in coastal Andhra.

Meanwhile, people chose to stay indoors as a result of dry, hot winds sweeping across the state.

The extreme heat was exacerbated by frequent power cuts which prevented people from using air-conditioners. Electricity supply is reportedly being regulated with power cuts for a few hours everyday with supply not tallying with increased demand.

“People will have tough days in the near future. For the last few weeks, there is a heat wave like condition with mercury rising steadily in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Ramagundam and Hyderabad,” said MeT scientist Subba Rao.

He further said that an all-time high of 44.5 degress in Hyderabad was previously recorded on 27 May 1938, May 28, 1998 and May 13, 2010, while the highest temperature was reported in Adilabad at 46 degree Celsius on May 10 last year.

“It looks likely the all-time high record temperature might be broken in Hyderabad,’’ Subba Rao said.

Today, the highest temperature was recorded at Rentachintala in the Guntur district which sizzled at 44 degree Celsius, followed by 43 degree Celsius in Adilabad, Nizamabad and Ramagundam and 40.4 degree Celsius in Hyderabad.
