Post matric scholarship hiked

Hyderabad, June 4: The Central government has decided to revise the post matric scholarship scheme for ST students. It has also been decided to include more castes and communities in central OBC list.

In a CCEA meeting presided by prime minister the proposal of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to substantially hike the post-matric scholarship amount and other benefits of ST students and disabled was approved.

Mr. P Chidambaram said that this revision will come into effect from July last year.

The CCEA also revised the income ceiling of parents from 1.45 lakh to 2 lakh per annum for their kids to avail the benefits. Reader allowances for blind students, transport allowances for disabled students, escort allowances for severely handicapped and helper allowances have been increased. Coaching allowances for mentally retarded and mentally-ill have also gone up.

Approval is also given to the recommendations of the National Commission for Backward Classes for amendment in the Central list of OBCs for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharastra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP, Uttarakhand, Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar islands and Pondichery. Amendments in the Central lists of OBCs in respect of these states so that these castes and communities would be able to avail the benefits of reservations in the Central government services and posts as well as in the Central educational institutions will now be made by ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
