Posing as Jagan, caller asks MLA to pay up

Hyderabad, May 03: A person who has been trying to extort money from Secunderabad Cantonment MLA P Shankar Rao by introducing himself as Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan Reddy was nabbed by the Musheerabad police today.

Police told that Shankar Rao received a telephone call today from the stranger who said “I am YS Jagan speaking’’. Shankar Rao, who was in disbelief, asked the caller what he wanted.

“The caller demanded that the MLA give Rs 2 lakh and he ordered him to deposit the money in a specific bank account,’’ Musheerabad Sub-Inspector Venkat Reddy. During the conversation Shankar Rao told the caller not to bluff him, saying he could easily recognise the voice of Jagan. “But the caller told the MLA that he would face dire consequence if the money was not deposited,’’ police said.

Acting on a complaint lodged by the legislator, police traced the telephone calls from Moghulpura and nabbed one M Krishna of Sultanshahi. During the interrogation police came to know that it was the same person who had called up Shankar Rao on April 23 and demanded money.

Police said that Krishna had known Shankar Rao for a long time and the former even took financial help from the latter on a few occasions.

“But this time he tried to take money by threatening Rao as he was not sure whether Shankar Rao will give him money if approached honestly,’’ Venkat Reddy said.

The accused is a member of Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS). He was arrested.
