Almost every school in the old city lacks basic facilities. It seems as if the old city is being deliberately converted into a slum area. The poor students of old city do not even have buildings to study in. In some areas teachers teach students by making them sit under the trees. With lack of furniture students have to sit on the ground itself. The schools of old city not only lack adequate furniture but they also lack toilet facility. There are some schools in which all the classes are run in two or three rooms. In some schools vidya volunteers are employed to teach the students. These volunteers are paid a paltry salary of Rs 1800 per month that too irregularly.
The Urdu language which gave us slogans like Inquilab Zindabad and patriotic songs like Sare Jahan Se Achcha Hindustan Hamara during the freedom struggle has become alien in its own land.
During the past 15 years the government has shut down at least 40 to 60 percent Urdu medium schools and the secret policy continues unabated. Expressing anger over injustice towards Urdu, the Urdu lover late Dr. Raj Bahadur Goud had once said ‘government thinks that Urdu no longer remains to be a job-oriented language; I am a doctor and I have done MBBS in Urdu from Osmania University’.
