Polling for 3 Council seats on May 7

Hyderabad, April 07: Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the elections to the three seats in the AP Legislative Council which are vacant.

Polling for these seats would held on May 7 and counting on May 10.

According a press release issued by the ECI, the notifications would be issued on April 13, last date for nominations is April 20, scrutiny on April 21 and withdrawal of nominations on April 23.

The Council comprises 90 members out of which 31 would be elected by the Members of the Legislative Assembly, 31 from Local Authorities, 8 from Graduates and 8 from Teachers Constituencies and 12 members would be nominated by the Governor.

Elections to the Council for 75 seats out of the 78 seats to be filled by election were held in the year 2007 and for remaining 3 seats namely, two seats from Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency and one seat from Rangareddy Local Authorities Constituency, could not be conducted due to non-existence of the required number of Local Bodies/ electors constituting the electorates in those constituencies.

The Local Bodies Elections to the GHMC have been completed recently and there are required number of local bodies and the electors of Hyderabad Local Authorities and Rangareddy Local Authorities Constituencies.

In view of the above, the Election Commission has decided to hold elections.

The Commission informed that the model code of conduct would come into force with immediate effect in the constituencies going to elections.

As the term of the, to-be elected members have to be synchronised with the rest of the members, the Commission has announced that the term of one member would end in May next year, the second member would continue up to May 2013 and the third member would continue till May 2015.
