Politics needs more women, says US expert

Hyderabad, August 22: Asserting that women can manage not only the home and family but also society, Janet Beilstein, education expert from Alabama, US delivered a lecture on ‘Women in politics’. The lecture which was conducted by the Osmania University Centre for International Programme (OUCIP) at its campus comprised of students from various streams. Janet felt that men who governed in the past didn’t rightfully articulate certain interests and said the time had come for women to take the plunge into active politics. “It is true that civil organisations and people want to see more women in policy making bodies. Women are the main grassroots organisers in political parties,” she opined.

Citing an example of the South African Parliament, where 33 per cent of the members are from the fairer sex, she opined, “Though South Africa is an African nation, the women there are doing fairly good.” She added, “Irrespective of the country, women should have representation and a voice.” Replying to a question on what she felt about women’s performance in other fields, Janet expressed, “Across all the regions and any kind of arena, woman have started to empower themselves, not just in politics but other fields too.” Janet Beilstein is an International Education Program Specialist at International officer School, Alabama. She has worked extensively on the issues of sustainability and growth in Africa.
