Policeman run over by bus

Chennai, April 23: A constable, who fell from his motorcycle, was run over by a bus on GST Road near Alandur on Wednesday.

Tambaram traffic police sources said the accident occurred around 3.45 p.m. when Jabamani (52), a head constable attached to the Tambaram police station, on a motorcycle rammed in to a bus near the Azarkana bus stop.

He fell down and was run over by the rear wheels of the bus, sources added.

The body was sent for post-mortem to the Government Hospital in Chromepet.

Four arrested

Four persons, including a couple, employed in a sports goods store in Chepauk were arrested by police on Thursday for allegedly cheating their employer of Rs.1 crore.

According to a press release from the Central Crime Branch of the city police, the accused Nagalingam, John Varghese, Muthukumar and his wife Kavitha had altered the accounts of the firm they were employed with and swindled Rs.1 crore in the last two years.

M. Sivakumar, the owner of the store found out the fraud recently and lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of Police. The CCB investigated the complaint and arrested the four persons on Thursday.

They were remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison, the release said.

Two held for chain snatching

Two persons, including a woman, suspected to be involved in a series of chain-snatching offences were apprehended by the Kotturpuram police on Thursday.

According to police sources, a special team formed to investigate complaints of chain-snatching incidents detained Nagarajan (28) and his associate Rajeswari (25) of West Saidapet. The accused confessed to having committed nine chain-snatching in the Adyar police district areas. About 44 sovereigns of jewellery were recovered from them.

Police said the two would go on a motorcycle and identify women walking alone in isolated areas. After stopping near the target, Rajeswari would pretend to be making enquiries about an address while Nagarajan would snatch the chain.

Suspect held

The Crime Branch CID police on Wednesday arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the spurious drugs case.

According to a release, a special team investigating the case arrested Vallamdas Ramu (29) of Nalgonda district under various provisions of the IPC and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

The accused had sold spurious Primolut-N medicines to a medical agency in Tamil Nadu, the release said.

Quack arrested

Arumugham (58) of Nandivaram-Guduvancheri was arrested on Thursday on charges of treating persons without having necessary qualification. He had been arrested in 2005 on same charges.

According to police, Arumugham has not even cleared higher secondary examination. Claiming that he had completed a “diploma course in medical treatment,” he had been providing allopathic treatment to the public for more than a decade when he was arrested in 2005. He was later acquitted.

Subsequently, he set up a three-bed hospital with pharmacy at his residence on Nellikuppam Road. He had also displayed a list of doctor’s names in front of the hospital.
