Hyderabad, March 09: A huge consignment of liquor worth nearly Rs 9 lakh was seized by the Cyberabad police during vehicle checking on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday night.
Sources said the police detected the liquor during frisking conducted to stop Telangana activists from entering the city ahead of the proposed Million March on March 10.
According to sources, police took up frisking on the city outskirts to prevent Telangana supporters from entering the city after intelligence inputs alerted them about poeple sneaking in from the neighbouring districts well ahead of the proposed protest.
The Hayathnagar police, who took up frisking at Pedamberpet, intercepted a lorry having Maharashtra registration number, MH 45 B 6434. On seeing the policemen, the driver and the others abandoned the vehicle and fled from the spot.
“We seized 380 cartons of various brands of liquor worth `9 lakh from the vehicle. But we are yet to ascertain from where the consignment came and where it was headed,” Hayathnagar police inspector B Bhaskar said.
