Police scare ‘T’ MLAs, MPs from Maoists

Hyderabad, November 03: The State police see a threat potential to the elected representatives from the Telangana region from the outlawed CPI (Maoists).

In a letter written to the Congress MPs and TRS MLAs, who have surrendered their security, the State Intelligence Department feared that the MPs and MLAs might have a threat from the banned CPI (Maoists).

It may be mentioned that 12 TRS MLAs and nine Congress MPs surrendered the security provided to them on Oct 17 and Oct 19 respectively by the State Government. They did so to protest against a comment allegedly made by AP Police Officers Association president Chalapathi Rao saying that the politicians would not survive without gunmen and that the security persons of the MLAs would resort to “gun down” as shown in the film “Operation Duryodhana.” Although the Association later issued a clarification on the statement, the MLAs and MPs did not take their security back.

However, on October 29, Additional DGP (Intelligence) M Mahender Reddy reportedly issued a letter to these 21 elected representation expressing fears that they might have a threat from the Maoists.

“It is brought to the notice of the undersigned that the security provided to you was returned. In this regard, it is to inform that the escape of CPI (Maoists) at Tadwai in Warangal district on October 26 clearly indicates that the CPI (Masoists) are active in Telangana districts. Hence, it is requested to take back the security in the interest of your safety and security.”

While the TRS MLA K Tarakarama Rao leaked the confidential letter to the media, Congress MP from Karimanagar Ponnam Prabhakar admitted of having received the letter. Ponnam said that he would not take back the security until the State Government takes action against the police official for his comments.
