Police put TV channels on notice

Hyderabad, March 20: The City police gave three days time to the news channels to withdraw airing crime serials.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner A K Khan told Express that police will be monitoring all the news channels for the next three days to see which news channels continued to air such programmes. “If they are found to air the serials even after three days, notices will be served to the respective media houses,’’ Khan said.

In fact, a petition was filed in the AP High Court in which the petitioner, an advocate, sought action against Khan for not implementing the Court orders given once in December last year and twice this year. The Court had directed the Commissioner to ensure that such programmes are not aired on the channels.

The advocate had filed the public interest litigation to stop telecasting crime serials as it violated the Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act, 1995. In a meeting chaired by Police Commissioner with other senior police officers of the City and representatives of news channels, a three-member committee was formed. `We will be finalising the members shortly,’’ A K Khan added.
