Police open fire on protesting students at OU

Hyderabad, January 7: The protest demanding separate Telangana state once again took a violent turn on Thursday at Osmania University, the hotbed of Telangana agitation.

Students took to streets as contents of the Sri Krishna Committee report went public with scores of students pelting stones and police retaliating by exploding grenades. As expected police tried to suppress the protest and despite the fact that chief minister and home minister repeatedly announced not to use force, police used full force against the protesting students.

Police opened fire on agitating students with rubber bullets. They fired more than 80 rounds to disperse protestors. According to unconfirmed reports more than 300 round firing has been claimed to have taken place.

60 students are said to have suffered injuries due to police firing, caning and stone pelting.

However police officials have admitted that 6 students have suffered injuries of whom one student Ravi Kumar is said to be critical.

The situation became tense when students took out a rally from historical Osmania University and headed towards Raj Bhawan, when police and central para-military forces who were already deployed at the area stopped the rally and used aggressive force.

At one o’clock in afternoon a relief bus was set ablaze by the students near Osmania University Arts College.

The tear gas shells which were used against protesting students are said to have been expired in 2006 and they may prove hazardous for students’ health.
