Police open fire in air in Kurnool district

Kurnool, January 23: Police had to open fire to quell clashing workers of the Jindal cement factory Chilakalaguduru village under Gadivemula mandal of the district on Sunday. The workers were demanding compensation to the family of a construction worker Rajaram, who accidentally fell down and died on Saturday.

There was a heated exchange between the representatives of the factory management and the workers. Some ten persons were injured when workers attacked the management representatives with sticks. When the police intervened, the workers hurled stones at the police personnel and damaged the police jeep. When the situation was going out of control, the police fired in the air. However, no one was injured in the firing.

Meanwhile, the factory managing director said that though they agreed to pay compensation to the bereaved family, the workers resorted to agitation and vandalism. The MD also said that they would talk to the bereaved family and pay compensation.
