New Delhi: A Jharkhand Police official was suspended for torturing a 13-year-old tribal girl working as a maid in his house, authorities said on Thursday.
Police Inspector Umesh Thakur posted in Ranchi Crime Investigating Department was suspended on the basis on initial investigation made by CID Superintendent of Police Jaya Rai.
The issue of torture came to light on Monday when reports said the minor girl was mot only brutally thrashed by Thakur, his wife and brother-in-law but was also hit with a hot iron rod.
Thakur and his family members have gone missing since after the issue was reported in local media.
According to police sources, cases under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been lodged against Thakur and his family members.
The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 be paid to the minor girl.
The next hearing will take place on August 17.
