Police nab gunmen who attacked Fonseka supporters

Colombo, January 13: The two suspected gunmen, who carried out an attack on a bus carrying supporters of common opposition Sri Lankan Presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka were arrested today, the police said.

A woman was killed and eight others sustained injuries during the attack in the home district of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in what was the first political killing to the run-up to the Presidential polls.

Motorbike borne gunmen yesterday sprayed bullets on the bus killing one person and injuring eight others in Tangalle in Southern Sri Lanka.

The suspects were arrested in Hungama in the Southern Province, the police said.

“We are now examining the suspects as there were reports that one of the suspects was mentally retarded,” the Daily Mirror online quoted a police official to say.

The government in a statement yesterday had assured all steps to bring the guilty to book.
