Agra, November 15:The body of a 24-year-old woman was lifted by police from the funeral pyre in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district Sunday after her parents filed a complaint that she was set on fire for not mdeeting the dowry demands of her in-laws.
The incident took place in the Rasoolpur village of Firozabad district Sunday afternoon.
“The woman, Dagshree, sustained severe burn injuries Saturday afternoon after which her husband and in-laws rushed her to the district hospital. However, she was referred to Agra and died during treatment. Her husband Maan Singh, along with other relatives, returned to Firozabad with the body in the wee hours today (Sunday),” inspector Mahesh Chand of Rasoolpur police station told IANS over phone.
On Sunday morning, they were performing her last rites in Rasoolpur village, he added.
“Dagshree’s (parental) family members came to us, accusing Maan Singh and his family of killing their daughter. We instantly reached the funeral ground and took the body in our possession after dousing the pyre”, Chand said.
A case under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Singh and his family.
