Washington, July 16: The US police have killed a suspected gunman near the US Capital building in Washington DC after he pulled a gun during a routine traffic stop.
Police say that officers shot dead a 35-year-old man who was stopped for a traffic violation but ‘fled and drove at a high rate of speed around the [Capitol Hill] complex’.
“He almost hit officers, he crashed into a car, and he came out of his car shooting what appears to be an automatic [weapon].”
Eyewitnesses said multiple gunshots were fired during the incident. One officer was also injured in the shooting, police said.
Following the gunfire, police temporarily sealed off some of the entrances to the Capitol, home of the US Congress.
