Police in jitters ahead of ‘Odarpu Yatra’

Warangal, May 27: With the people of the region determined to prevent Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tour of the heartland of Telangana, Warangal district, and the MP equally stubborn about proceeding with it, the Warangal police are in jitters ahead of DDay – May 28 – when the show is scheduled to roll out of Mahaboobabad.

Intelligence inputs have it that local units of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) are planning stiff resistance to the yatra. And though police officials are tightlipped on the security arrangements, they admit off the record that the tour is likely to witness violence that might spread beyond the district.

”Additional forces from Adilabad and Karimnagar were drawn in for the bandobust, which will be on a large scale as we know the sentiments of the people of this region,” a senior police official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Policemen are apprehensive that some protestors might climb cell phone towers and threaten to take their own lives or try to immolate themselves within the vicinity of the MP to show their opposition. They are likely to take important political and student leaders into preventive custody from Thursday as a precautionary measure, sources said.

Sources said the Telangana JACs and the proJagan camps have chalked out their own plans for the showdown. Meanwhile, TDP legislators Erraballi Dayakar Rao, R Prakash Reddy and others met superintendent of police Shahnawaz Khasim and collector N Sridhar and asked them to stop the tour. They apprehended that antisocial elements might join the tour to boost the numbers.

Sources said student leaders of Kakatiya and Osmania universites are taking their campaign into interior villages and drumming up opinion against Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tour.

Telangana civil organisations have decided to organise a rally in Mahabubabad tomorrow while advocates from 10 Telangana districts are planning a vantavarpu.
