Police fire teargas shells to disperse mob

Srinagar, March 19: Police today fired teargas shells to disperse a mob protesting the killing of a civilian during an exchange of fire between militants and securitymen at Sopore.

The situation in Sopore town of north Kashmir remained tense as a strike called by locals entered its third day with shops and business establishments remaining closed against the police action.

When the protestors defied orders to disperse, policemen used batons and fired teargas shells. Locals alleged that Tanvir Ahmad was killed on Tuesday by police when securitymen were attacked by militants at Sopore, 55 kms from here.

However, police maintained that Ahmad was killed in an exchange of fire between them and militants. The demonstrators also alleged that police arrested three traders Fayaz Ahmad, Irshad Ahmad and Ali Mohammad and beat them up without any reason.
