Police fire in air to disperse mob in Srinagar

Srinagar, Nov 07: Police fired in the air and burst teargas shells to disperse demonstrators protesting in the civil lines near here against the murder of a youth.

Shops and other activities came to halt in the Civil Lines, including Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city, busy Budshah Chowk, Amira Kadal, Gaw Kadal, Maisuma, Red Cross road and Madina Chowk after body of a youth was found this morning.

Later people, mostly youths, took to streets and pelted stones on passing vehicles, in which 12 people, including two cameramen, were injured.

Additional security forces were rushed to the area from police station Maisuma to control the situation.

However, the security forces resorted to lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators who were moving towards Budshah Chowk to block the main road. Traffic was diverted to other routes, leading to massive traffic jams.

Security forces burst teargas shells which too had no affect on the demonstrators who were pelting stones.

Later, the security forces fired about half a dozen rounds in the air to control the situation.

Situation was tense in the entire area, sources said.

Police, however, said dead body of a person was recovered this morning from Maisuma bund.

The cause of his death was not immediately known, police said.
