Police detain Karimnagar youth

Hyderabad, September 30: A day after senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member V Hanumantha Rao is alleged to have received threatening telephone calls, the Amberpet police reportedly picked up a youth from Karimnagar district who had made the call to the MP.

The youth identified as Mahipal Reddy is said to be a follower of another senior Congress leader.

Sources said that the anti-goonda squad picked up Mahipal Reddy after obtaining the details of the caller from the service provider.

“We are still interrogating him,’’ a police official said. Hanumantha Rao received the threatening call around 9.30 p.m on Monday after the caller threatened to kill the senior leader if he did not stop airing his views against Kadapa MP Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. Following this, a special police team was formed. “The caller switched off his mobile after issuing threats. The phone was also seized,’’ a police official said.

Hanumantha Rao had lodged a formal complaint with the Amberpet police yesterday. Cases were registered under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of IPC.
