New Delhi, April 28: The Delhi Police special cell has detained a trade union leader and his wife for their suspected links with the Maoists in the Capital.
The couple identified as Gopal Mishra and his wife Anu were reportedly in police custody till late on Tuesday with the police not confirming whether they were likely to be arrested.
Police sources said Mishra and his wife came under scanner for allegedly trying to infiltrate various trade unions in the Capital.
They were said to be active in various industrial areas of the NCR. “ They are suspected of trying to brainwash many displaced labourers and other lowly paid daily wagers,” said a senior police officer.
The detention of the couple came to light when an NGO — Committee for Release of Political Prisoners ( CRPP) — claimed that Mishra and his wife were picked up on April 25 and April 26 respectively from their residence in Nathu Colony of Ramnagar in East Delhi.
The NGO said the information was confirmed by Ritesh Kumar, the owner of the house where the couple was staying as tenants.
The activists of the CRPP believe that another trade union leader Pradeep is under detention by the Delhi Police.
We believe there are at least two more persons, including Pradeep, in police custody. We want a statement from the police,” the CRPP’s statement said.
Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat couldn’t be reached for comment.
