Hyderabad City Police Commissioner M Mahendar Reddy here on Monday said the Police department was sparing no efforts for making Hyderabad a Safe and Smart City. Elaborating the vision of his department, he stressed the need for creating a partnership between the Police and the Public through Community Policing for building a safe, secure and stable society.
The city police chief was speaking at an ‘Open House’ session organized by the Hyderabad City Police on October 20, 2014 at Parade Ground, Secunderabad, as part of the Police Commemoration Week. He also highlighted on the lately launched Patrolling and Interceptor vehicles for quick response to any Law and Order contingencies and to attend to the needs of people under grave life threatening emergencies and prevent occurrence of crime. He stressed on improving and ensuring safe living conditions and build a crime-free city.
The Commissioner of Police interacted with schoolchildren during the program He explained them about the designated duties of policemen and the significance of the Police Commemoration Day slated to be observed on October 21. It was a day out for the schoolchildren from the routine academics to sensitize themselves on the functioning of the police.
It may be mentioned here that the history of Commemoration Day traces back to October 21, 1959 when a CRPF patrol party, led by Sub-Inspector Karan Singh, was ambushed by the Chinese forces at Ladakh Hot Springs and 10 jawans were killed. The bravery and resultant sacrifice of jawans fighting at 16,000 ft altitude in extremely cold conditions and against all odds, is an epitome of the rarest of the rare courage. Indo-Tibetan Border Police sends a representative party of all police forces, of the country to Hot Springs, Ladakh every year to pay homage to the martyrs,who laid down their lives on October 21, 1959 while guarding national frontiers. Therefore, on October 21 every year, Commemoration Day is observed to acknowledge with pride the supreme sacrifices made by brave police martyrs, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty and rich tributes are paid to them.
The Police Commemoration Week, which occurs each year in October, recognizes the service and sacrifice of martyrs and pays special recognition to those law-enforcement officers, who lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. On the occasion, a wide range of arms, including light machine guns and sophisticated rifles besides the devices used to detect bombs and other explosive material, were kept on display. Hands on demonstration of various weapons and equipment used by the members, was given by concerned units. Apart from various weapons and other equipment used by different wings of Police department, a mock drill to control riots, using different methods like warning, tear gas, water cannon, lathi-charge and mounted police using batons were performed.
