Police clueless on Suraj episode

Hyderabad, April 22: Two days after the kidnap and release of a pawn broker’s son at Hayathnagar, police still are clueless about the reasons and persons behind the abduction. More importantly, police are yet to verify the veracity of the claims of the boy, Suraj Singh.

Suraj Singh, a class VII boy from Hayathnagar, was kidnapped by unidentified persons in the morning and later let off at Ibrahimpatnam in the night. The abductors demanded Rs 50 lakh from the boy’s grandfather Bhoor Singh, also a pawn broker, but released him even before the demand was met.

Suraj’s claims about the manner of kidnap are throwing up several questions. However, police could not `grill’ the boy on Tuesday as they were busy with the Chief Minister’s visit to Hayathnagar and on Wednesday the family left for Shirdi on a pilgrimage. The family is likely to return in two days. “Suraj claims there were nearly 12 occupants in the Indica in which he was abducted, which is unbelievable.” Further, Suraj claimed he was sedated with chloroform. “Chloroform, if used in small quantity, will sedate a person only for a few minutes while a larger dose can be fatal.

Suraj claims that he went into a slumber for three to four hours,” an officer said. Police said they would `counsel’ the boy rather than question him to ascertain the facts.

Bhoor Singh has four daughters and no sons. “We would also probe whether financial disputes in the family had led to the kidnap,” police said. Incidentally, the ransom call came to Bhoor Singh and not to the boy’s parents.
