Police burst teargas shell to disperse women rally

Imphal, August 22: Police burst teargas shells and smoke bombs to prevent hundreds of women from taking out protest rallies defying night curfew at many places in Imphal East and West districts of Manipur tonight.

The protesters were demanding resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh on moral grounds over the killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter on July 23, sources said.

Women, carrying torch lights, turned up in large numbers at Chingamakha, Tidim road, Nganappi Thong, Nambul Mapal, Bamol Leikai and Khurai areas at around 8.45 pm defying night curfew in force, they said.

Police tired to prevent them but were forced to burst teargas shells when the protestors went on with their agitation, they said, adding no casualty was reported.

The rally was organised by a major social organisation Apunba Lup.
