Police averts child marriage of dalit girl

Punjab police averted the child marriage of a dalit girl here today, who alleged that she was being sold to her-in-laws for Rs 9000. Police arrested seven people who were held responsible for the marriage of the 13-year-old girl which was being performed in the Ram Nagar Basti here this evening.

Police said the minor girl made disclosure during the marriage ceremony that she was being sold off to her in laws for Rs 9000.

Those arrested included Roop Chand, father of the girl, Balwinder Kaur, her mother, Rani, mother of bridegroom Pardeep, and Rajesh, his brother. However, the bridegroom, a resident of Barwala town of Haryana, managed to give a slip to the police. UNI
