Police arrest students as they attempt to besiege Secretariat

Police arrested students when they were trying to lay siege to the Andhra Pradesh Secretariat and Minister’s residences located at Jubliee Hills in the city today in protest against the government’s decision to cap the payouts under the fee reimbursement scheme.

Demanding withrawal of government’s proposal to change the current fee reimbursement scheme, a large number of Osmania Univesity students belonging to BC and OBC, in the afternoon, took out a huge procession towards the Secretriat.

When the students tried to barge into the Secretariat, where cabinet sub-committee meeting was going on the reimbursement row, the police personnel-who were deployed at the secretariat obstructed and arrested them. Mild tension also prevailed in front of Secretariat when the agitators damaged the window panes of a private school. Some of the students from Telangana Vidyardhi Sangam, who gathered at the Minister’s residences located at Jubliee Hills, were also obstructed and arrested by the police when they were trying to besiege the Minister’s residences.

The state government has been drawing huge criticism from political leaders and even from the Congress leaders and students after it announced that students, who secure 50 per cent of marks only, would be entitled to the fee reimbursement hereafter. UNI
